Do You Remember?

Go all the way to the bottom past the pictures. I think you'll enjoy it. Whoever wrote this must have been my next door neighbor because it totally described my childhood to a T. Hope you enjoy it.

Black and White

Black and White (Under age 40? You won't understand.)

SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT THE PAST
IN BLACK &WHITE

You could hardly see for all the snow,

Spread the rabbit ears as far as they go.

Pull a chair up to the TV set,

'Good Night, David.

Good Night, Chet.'

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.

My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter and
I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.

The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.

We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.

Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.

Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.

We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses?

Our's wore a hat and everything.

I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.

I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.

Oh yeah... and where was the Benadryl and sterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!

We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the

48- cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine did) and then we got our butt spanked.

Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49 bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.

We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got our butt spanked again when we got home.

I recall Donny Reynolds from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off.

Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house.

Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.

To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family.

How could we possibly have known that?

We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes?

We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac!

How did we ever survive?

LOVE TO ALL OF US WHO SHARED THIS ERA. AND TO ALL WHO DIDN'T, SORRY FOR WHAT YOU MISSED.

I WOULDN'T TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING

Pass this to someone and remember that life's most simple pleasures are very often the best

GRATITUDE! Tell them Thank You!

Hello Silver bullets! Have not checked up on you for a spell!
No doubt you will fill the same way about this!

I am so thankful for the men & women who Serve our Country!
I try to shake every hand, as I come face to face with them. Maybe not convenient or in the right situation, at least give them The Sign!

Tell Scott Truitt Thanks for putting it together:
scott@gratitudecampaign.org

Scott writes below:

The Gratitude Campaign

The Story of How it all got started

For the past several years as I've been traveling around the country, I've been approaching soldiers in the airports and thanking them for serving for us. On several occasions I have noticed that it felt a little awkward for both of us. There are several reasons, some of which I am even just now learning as I produce this film and talk to more soldiers. But they have always appreciated being thanked, and I have always felt better having expressed my gratitude.

I started to think that it would be nice if civilians had a gesture or sign that they could use to say "thank you" quickly and easily without even having to approach. I did some research and found the sign that we are now using.

Is this limited to the military? Not at all. If you look around you I'm sure that you'll find lots of people who are serving their communities, from local to global. If you appreciate their service, give them a sign. Say "thank you."

Stop & Smell The *RED MARBLES*

A Good Friend Of Ours Sent This To Us and Let Me Just say,
"That It Was Timely!"

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes.

I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprizing a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes, but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas.

I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes. Pondering the peas, I could not help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.

'Hello Barry, how are you today?'

'H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good.'

'They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?'

'Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time.'

'Good. Anything I can help you with?'

'No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas.'

'Would you like take some home?' asked Mr. Miller.

'No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.'

'Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?'

'All I got's my prize marble here.'

'Is that right? Let me see it' said Miller.

'Here 'tis. She's a dandy.'

'I can see that. Hmmmmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the store owner asked.

'Not zackley but almost.'

'Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble', Mr. Miller told the boy.

'Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.'

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.

With a smile said, 'There are two other boys like him in our community; all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.

When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends the m home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.'

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man.

A short time later I moved to **Colorado**, but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one.

Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that **Idaho** community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died.

They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends w anted to go, I agreed to accompany them.

Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men.

One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking.

They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket.

Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket.

Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket.

Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles.

With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

'Those three young men' who just left were the boys you told me about. They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them.

Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size....they came to pay their debt.'

'We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,' she confided, 'but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho '.

With loving gentleness, she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

The Moral : We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.

Today I wish you a day of ordinary miracles ~ A fresh pot of coffee you didn't make yourself.

An unexpected phone call from an old friend.

Green stoplights on your way to work.

The fastest line at the grocery store.

A good sing-along song on the radio.

Your keys found right where you left them.

Send this to the people you'll never forget.

I just Did..............................

If you do not send it to anyone, it means you are in way too much of a hurry to even notice the ordinary miracles when they occur.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived!*

Be Blessed as you continue in your Seasoned Years. DP

“Writing Keeps Me Young!”, said Phyllis A. Whitney

One of the things that I really enjoy is 'Writing'. After evaluating the Wealth in Books, (See series in BookWealth!) I see where Mystery Lovers took a loss, as Novelist Phyllis A. Whitney died February 8, 2008 at 104, in a hospital near her home reported by son-in-law, Ed Pearson.

It was reported that she said, “Writing Keeps Me Young!” as she was still publishing Romantic 'Who Done Its' even at ninety-four.

Though a sadden time for many, an encouragement to we who are looking at all things that keep our Youthfulness in our Senior years.

Read more about this famous Lady by going to DP Gatten Dot Com.

And stay current on the exciting information that will let you not only read about, but also live your Senior Youthfulness.

Hoaxes And Scams Against Seniors!

Many seniors find themselves in a place where Scam Artist and Purveyors of Hoaxes use all kinds of ways to rip them off. Banking and Credit Info, Insurance, Investment and probably the most used is Posing as some part of the Social Security System.

Make sure you are aware of these different tactics and when receiving a phone call, inquiry through the US Postal Service and/or including an E-Mail request, make sure that you contact the sender through a return call to or search for the legitimate Company or Agency on the Internet.

Regardless of how youthful you believe you are, make sure of what you are doing before giving out any of your Information. Even Social Security’s ‘Public Affaires Specialist’ Tom Clark warns:
In an effort to combat such frauds, we want to make one thing perfectly clear: Social Security will not send you an e-mail asking you to give us your personal information, such as your Social Security number, date of birth, or other private information. If someone saying they are from Social Security does e-mail you requesting information, don't respond to the message. Instead contact your local Social Security office or call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to see whether we really need any information from you.

We need to be continually solvent that our Senior Youthfulness will always be funded!
Until next time, DP

Handicapped Youthfulness!

OK … What about you Seniors that have handicaps … Physical ones?
Do you think I have been hard nosed & inconsiderate by centering in on the Go Go Go? Let me hear from some of you.

I know for a fact that having crushed both of my heals into my ankles (One in 1956 and the other one in 1972) broke my back (L-2 in 1964), that it did slow me down for quite a while. Being 16 in 56 and 3 days after I was in a full leg cast (Broke the femur at the same time.) and dancing at a Jr Hi Dance put on by the VFW where I met the wife of my youth, The Lovely Marilyn. That did not slow me down, but the other leg & foot in 72 kept me off work for 6 months. It was the back that took the toll.

What I have learned in the last 11 years is that we will do what it takes at the time and pay the penalty soon after.
The wife has extreme Fibermyalgia, yet we will both Go & Go to take advantage of opportunities even tho she may spend 3 or 4 days in bed afterwards.
B U T we have not stopped living. I take a Darviset when I need to and get ready to do it again. BTW I only use an Rx when I have pushed the envelope.

OK enough about us and us living “In The Now” … “Paying The Piper” and savoring the experiences. What about you?

Do you think that you are to far gone to recap some of that ‘Youthfulness’? or maybe you have endured somethings that make our ailments look like a ‘Cake Walk’ and are doing even more than we do. Tell us about it. Come on I dare ya!

Looking forward to hearing from you, so that being something to write about next time. Be Blessed! DP

Tip A Cashier

While checking out a link on Blogosphere I came across an article:
"Spiritual Discipline: Tip Your Cashier" by Pastor Jim Moss. It caught my eye and I left this comment:

Very Interesting!
Hi Jim,
The Wife of my youth and I were in a restaurant yesterday and we watched an elderly, somewhat handicapped woman tip the cashier, looking at wonanother we question our selves about it, to no avail. Taaaaaaa Daaaaaaaaaa!

And today 'Jim' comes up with an answer for us. Now we know that that might not be the answer for her, yet we will consider your contribution to being a part of our expenditures.
Thanks, and I will make a link on our Blog. dp
Jim has a Good Perspective in this post and I recommend that you take a look!

Senior Youthfulness Is For The Young Of Heart And For Those Who Are Tired Of Just Shriveling Up!

Many seniors refuse to be old. Senior Youthfulness, is 1st of all by choice and that being a mental decision to begin with and then, as it is believed, it is confirmed with the mouth. “As A Man Thinketh!” and “The Secret” confirm these things. (Of course, I learned it from The Source, i.e. Holy Writ, Which is another subject for another time.)

Over two decades ago, I had the blessing of giving the Eulogy for my Mother’s Passing. Part of it went like this: She did not want to be associated with older people, she insisted on being in our crowd or age group in whatever she did. In fact the only time she ever made a reference to Senior Citizen in her life, was to make sure she got her Senior Citizen Discount in restaurants, theaters and wherever there was any available!

She worked as a Registered Nurse helping the Seniors in a Convalescent Home the last 3 or 4 years of her youthful life. I still smile as I remember barely a month earlier at the youth of 68, she would always dance at our front door on her way out, singing happy as she could be, “I Get To Go To Work!”

We are looking for any source of Senior Youthfulness to post or reference here in your Blog. Even tho we are ‘rarin’ to go, we are still looking for things to encourage us even more! Comment here or even post us an E-Mail. We are looking forward to seeing you here on the next post! Be Blessed, DP

Are there any Silver Bullets out there?

SENIORS!: Are you youthful?

Many seniors refuse to be old. In fact, I think they go beyond the concept of just being "Seasoned Citizens". Plainly the ones I am thinking about should be called "Silver Bullets".

No doubt, that these Silver Bullets with the extra Senior Youthfulness will be an inspiration and an encouragement to some of the other Seasoned Citizens and that in turn will get them fired up and doing more for themselves and the added blessing of encouraging even more. I am looking forward to playing volley ball again, or something similar in the near future, ... what about you? BTW! I will soon be 67 years young and have only started my 'Middle Age'! The Patriarchs lived to be around 120 and I believe that it is possible today.

I have more to say about Senior Youthfulness, Yet I would like to see if there is any interest from others going down this road. What are your thoughts Seniors? Let me know! DP
